Privacy & Cookies
We collect as little as possible, build no profile, load nothing from third parties we do not need, and never sell your data.
Who is responsible
The publisher of fudami (see the legal notice) is the data controller for everything on this page. Questions and requests: [email protected]. This policy covers fudami.net, the dictionary jisho.fudami.net and the app app.fudami.net.
What we process, why, and on what basis
- Waitlist: if you join it, your email address, used only to tell you when fudami opens. Basis: your consent (GDPR Art. 6(1)(a)); ask us and it is deleted.
- Account (app): your email, and your name and profile picture if you sign in with Google, processed by our authentication provider Clerk to create and secure your account. Basis: our contract with you (Art. 6(1)(b)).
- Learning progress (app, once study launches): your reviews, tied to your account ID, to show and schedule your progress. Basis: contract.
- Dictionary searches (jisho): the words you search are sent to our server to find the answer. They appear in its technical logs without your IP address, and those logs are overwritten as they rotate (30 MB at most). Basis: our legitimate interest in running and securing the dictionary (Art. 6(1)(f)).
- Audience measurement (jisho): to improve the dictionary we count visits on our own server, without any third-party tool. Always, with no identifier: the page, your language, the website you came from (its name only), the day, and the fact that a search was made with its number of results (never the words searched). This anonymous counting needs no consent under the CNIL's audience-measurement exemption; it never includes your IP address. The day's totals (searches, kanji pages viewed) are shown publicly on the dictionary's home page. Only if you accept in the banner: a random identifier created in your browser, the time you actively spend on the dictionary, and the words you search with the number of results (so we can see what is missing). Basis: your consent (Art. 6(1)(a)); refuse or withdraw at any time, nothing changes in how the dictionary works.
- Technical and security data: Cloudflare processes your IP address and request metadata to deliver and protect all three sites; the app's server keeps a per-IP request counter for one hour to stop abuse. Basis: legitimate interest.
- Language poll: if you vote, we store one vote per language and a per-IP marker that expires within 24 hours to prevent duplicates. Basis: legitimate interest.
An email address is needed for the waitlist or an account; nothing else is required. We make no automated decisions about you and build no profile.
Cookies & local storage
No advertising and no cross-site cookies. Apart from audience measurement on the dictionary (below), what we use is strictly necessary or something you asked for, so it needs no consent:
- Security cookies set by Cloudflare on all three sites (
cf_clearance,__cf_bm,_cfuvid). - Sign-in cookies set by Clerk when you open the app (
__client,__client_uat), which manage your session. - Local storage, which stays in your browser and is not sent to us: your theme and language, your jisho search history (clear it from the search box), and Clerk's settings cache in the app.
Audience measurement on the dictionary. On jisho.fudami.net a banner asks you to accept or refuse; both buttons are equally easy, and nothing is stored before you choose. A browser sending Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track counts as a refusal and sees no banner. Your choice is remembered for six months, then asked again, and you can change it at any time with Cookie settings in the footer. We use local storage in your browser, not cookies: fudami-consent (your choice) and, only if you accepted, fj_vid (a random identifier) and fj_sid (a random identifier for the visit). If you refuse or withdraw, the identifiers are deleted from your browser at once.
Fonts are served from our own sites: your browser never contacts Google or any font provider.
Who processes your data
- Cloudflare, Inc. (United States): hosting of fudami.net and the app, the waitlist database, network and security for all three sites.
- Clerk, Inc. (United States): accounts and sign-in.
- Google: only if you choose to sign in with Google.
Transfers outside the EU rely on the EU–US Data Privacy Framework or the European Commission's standard contractual clauses in these providers' data processing terms. The dictionary runs on the publisher's own server, reached through Cloudflare. We do not sell or share your data with advertisers.
How long we keep it
- Waitlist: until fudami opens and you have been told, or until you ask us to delete it.
- Account and progress: as long as your account exists; deleted when you delete it.
- Dictionary logs: overwritten as they rotate. Request counters: one hour. Poll markers: 24 hours.
- Audience statistics (anonymous counts and, with consent, identifiers and searches): at most 25 months, then deleted.
- Cloudflare security logs: as set by Cloudflare for the protection of the network.
Your rights
You can ask to access, correct, delete, restrict or receive a copy of your data, withdraw your consent, and object to processing based on our legitimate interest. Write to [email protected]; we answer within one month. You can also complain to your data protection authority, in France the CNIL. fudami accounts are not meant for children under 15.
Changes
We update this page when our practices change and revise the date above; people on the waitlist and account holders are told of significant changes by email.
